Implantation bleeding is considered one of the early signs of pregnancy. It mimics like you have a period but it is quite different than your regular menstrual cycle. Here you will see how and why implantation bleeding occurs, how long does implantation bleeding last and what is its color.
What is Implantation Bleeding?
During the ovulation phase of menstrual cycle an egg is released. If a sperm fertilize this egg, a ball of cells called an embryo is formed. When this ball of cells or embryo moves from the fallopian tubes and gets attached or implanted to the uterus lining, bleeding occurs. This spotting or bleeding is called as implantation bleeding.
If you are trying to conceive then you should look for spotting as it is an early sign of pregnancy. This bleeding is not like a heavy flow but is rather spotting which usually disappears after 24 to 48 hours. It usually happens after 10 to 14 days of conceiving i.e. almost near to your period dates. This is the reason that you mistake it with your period. It is not dangerous but if you experience heavy flow with or without fever, chills or cramps, then it is better to consult a doctor.
When Implantation Bleeding happens/occurs?
As mentioned earlier it can happen somewhere near to your period e.g., if your cycle is of 28 days then it can happen somewhere between 24-26th day of your menstrual cycle. It is normal to bleed during implantation but the flow should not be too heavy. It is not dangerous for you and your baby until and unless if you bleed hard.
The following table will make it easy for you to know about your period, ovulation date and implantation if you have a normal 28 days menstrual cycle.
Menstrual cycle events
|Ovulation||14-15 day from the day 1 of your period|
|Implantation||24-26 day of menstrual cycle|
|Period||28th day of menstrual cycle|
Please note here that all the dates and speculation is based on 28 days of regular menstrual cycle.
What does implantation bleeding look like?
It is quite different from your period as it is like:
- Lighter in color,
- Brown pinkish discharge, (it can be also be brown blackish and seems like old blood),
- No medical help or treatment required unless there is heavy bleeding
How long implantation bleeding lasts?
It usually lasts for a day or two. It will disappear in 1 or 2 days with no or mild cramps.
Implantation bleeding symptoms
They are similar to early signs of pregnancy and periods. This is the reason that most women are confused in identifying the difference between implantation and periods. The following are the most common Implantation bleeding symptoms:
- Blood in brown and pinkish color,
- The blood disappear after 2 two days,
- You can have mild or no cramping,
- No blood clots like that in your periods,
- Food aversions,
- Mood swings.
- Tender swollen breasts and nipples,
- Frequent urination.
When to take a Pregnancy test?
It is not always necessary that every woman experience implantation bleeding. If you are confused between your period and spotting than it is better to take a pregnancy test. Normally it occurs before you feel morning sickness. It usually happens before you miss a period.
A pregnancy test is the best way to check if you are pregnant or not.
When to see a doctor?
If you have been actively trying for a baby and experience a heavy flow with cramping and clotted blood appears on your pad different from your menstrual blood then it is better to consult a doctor. Any type of heavy vaginal bleeding is not safe for you and you should in the first place look for medical assistance. Heavy bleeding with cramps can be a sign of miscarriage too.
