Osteoporosis or Osteoporotic bone break
Osteoporosis or Osteoporotic bone break is a medical condition in which an individual have a low bone mass density or in other words his or her bones are weaken and are easily liable to fracture. “Osteo” means “bone” and “porosis” means “porous” so osteoporosis is a bone disease in which you have porous bones. Throughout life bones are build and renewed but if a person have low bone mass density then these building and rebuilding of bones is disturbed. This means that the bones are weaken, have low mass density and are not in strength. Such bones are more likely to get unexpected and sudden fracture.
What gender is more effected by osteoporosis?
Well, it can occur in both men and women but women are more vulnerable to this bone disease. White and Asian women are more likely to have osteoporosis when they reach and older age. According to nof.org it is stated that “About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass”, and further they say “Approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis”.
Causes of Osteoporosis
There are several causes of osteoporosis which include hormonal, dietary, genetic, steroid medication and medical issues related to surgery.
Hormonal causes of osteoporosis
There are three different types of hormonal category which if disturbed can cause osteoporosis
- Sex hormones
Sex hormones have a link with the bone health. Low sex hormones means weaken bones, e.g. in women estrogen is an important sex hormone and its normal level maintain a good bone health but as a woman reaches menopause its level decrease which increases the risk of osteoporosis. This is the reason that older age women experience the problem of weaken bones. Women who are under breast cancer treatment also experience bone loss due to low estrogen level.
In case of men the sex hormone testosterone behaves in the similar way. Men also experience a gradual decrease in their testosterone levels as they get older. Men who have prostate cancer treatments also experience low testosterone levels.
- Thyroid hormones
Over activity of the thyroid hormone can result in bone loss.
- Parathyroid and adrenal glands hormones
Parathyroid and adrenal glands also secrete hormones and if they are overactive they can result in bone loss.
Dietary causes of osteoporosis
Another cause of bone loss is related to your diet. Your diet is one of the key factor which is usually responsible for many diseases.
- Calcium intake
Low calcium intake throughout life is one of the most common reason of low bone mass density. Our bones contain calcium and if cut of our intake of calcium and vitamin D then later in life it is more likely to experience bone problems and fractures.
- Being choosy in eating or not eating due to weight gain concerns
It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet along with exercise. Being underweight increases the low bone mass so it is important to have a proper BMI with respect to your age and height.
- Vitamin D intake
Calcium alone cannot help your bones. You need vitamin D to absorb calcium from the food you eat or drink. So having a good intake of vitamin D let it be from the sun, supplements or fish (salmon) is very important.
If you have a genetic history of osteoporosis in your family then it is possible to suffer from this disease even if you don’t have any of the dietary or hormonal factors.
Some of the other factors which include steroid medication or some medical treatments can also be a cause of osteoporotic bones.
Having a healthy balanced diet with regular exercise can help your bones to gain strength. Remember to include in your diet more calcium and vitamin D as they can help your bones in gaining strength.
